Science, reality and knowledge

The universe, mathematics and the limits of knowledge

Questions about mind lead quickly to questions about the world the mind lives in. This section collects conversations on physics, cosmology, mathematics and the scientific method: what space and time are, whether the universe can be described in numbers alone, where science's reach ends, and how to tell good reasoning from bad.

Some guests argue that science has been most successful by leaving the observer out, which leaves a gap where experience should be. Others defend the idea that physics, extended far enough, will explain minds too. There are conversations about quantum theory and what it says about observation, about the search for life elsewhere in the universe, and about why people so readily believe things that are false.

Dr Naidu's interest is practical as well as philosophical. Medicine depends on evidence, and a doctor needs a sense of what evidence can and cannot establish, how scientific consensus shifts, and where claims outrun the data. Listening to physicists and philosophers argue about those limits is a useful discipline for anyone who reads health news.
