Obesity and weight management in Cape Town
Weight is shaped by biology, environment, sleep, stress, medicines and habits, not by willpower alone. Care here is comprehensive and respectful, and built around change you can sustain.
Who this is for.
- People who have tried to lose weight before and want a medical rather than a commercial approach.
- People with conditions linked to weight, such as high blood pressure, prediabetes, joint pain or disturbed sleep.
- People whose weight changed after a life event, a medicine, an illness or pregnancy.
- People who want to look at weight alongside their overall health, not in isolation.
Concerns people bring.
- Weight gained after pregnancy, an illness, an injury or a change of medicine.
- Weight that returns after every attempt to lose it.
- Weight-related conditions such as high blood pressure, prediabetes, fatty liver or joint pain.
- A difficult relationship with food, including emotional or night-time eating.
- Wanting a plan that does not depend on strict rules.
- Not knowing which measurements matter besides the number on the scale.
How the work is done.
Weight management here is part of the same approach as everything else in the practice.
-
A full history
Your weight history, previous attempts, eating patterns, sleep, mood, activity and any medicines or conditions that affect weight. The story behind the number matters.
-
Proper baseline data
Weight, waist measurement and body composition read alongside blood pressure, glucose and other markers. Body mass index is a starting point, not the whole picture.
-
A plan reviewed over time
Nutrition, movement, sleep and behavioural change, built in steps you can keep. Whether other medical options have a place is discussed individually, with their benefits and risks, and reviewed as you go.
Your first visit.
The first visit starts with your story: your weight history, what you have tried, and how eating, sleep, mood and activity fit into daily life. You are not expected to have a target.
Weight and waist measurements are discussed with you and read alongside blood pressure and blood tests where they are useful. Options are explained with their benefits and risks, and nothing is decided in the first visit that you are not comfortable with.
What this is not.
- Not a commercial weight-loss programme. There are no packages, products or promised results.
- Not about blame or willpower. Weight is shaped by many factors outside a person's control.
- Not the only route to better health. Where another professional would help, referral is discussed with you.
No promised numbers.
Sustainable change is gradual, and bodies respond differently. No plan here promises a particular amount of weight loss or a timeline.
Common questions.
Is this only about losing weight?
No. The aim is better health. Energy, mobility, sleep, blood pressure and blood sugar often matter as much to a person as the figure on the scale.
Is body mass index the only measure used?
No. It is a useful starting point, but it does not describe where weight is carried or how healthy the body is. Waist measurement, body composition and blood markers add the detail.
Will I be judged?
No. Obesity is a health condition with many causes, and care here is respectful and free of blame.
Do I need a target weight to start?
No. Goals are set together, and they can be about health and function as well as weight.
Will I be put on a diet?
No fixed diet is imposed. Eating is looked at as part of your life, and changes are agreed with you in steps you can keep.
What if I have had a bad experience of weight care before?
That is common, and it is worth telling the doctor. Care here is respectful and free of blame, and you set the pace.
Can I come if I want to improve my health but not lose weight?
Yes. Energy, mobility, sleep, blood pressure and blood sugar can all be worked on, and goals are set together.
