Values-based and personalised care in Cape Town

Identifying risk early and building a strategy to prevent disease, rather than reacting to it once it has arrived. The plan is built around your history, your risk and your values.

Who this is for.

  • Adults who want a more thorough look at their health than a routine visit allows.
  • People with a family history of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure or cancer.
  • People at the life stages when risk begins to rise, such as midlife.
  • People who have not had a full check-up in a long time and are not sure where to start.

Concerns people bring.

  • A family history of heart disease, stroke, diabetes or cancer.
  • Blood pressure or cholesterol at the upper end of the usual range.
  • Not being sure which screening tests are due for your age.
  • Changes around midlife and what they mean for long-term health.
  • Wanting a baseline set of numbers to follow over the years.
  • A diagnosis in someone close to you that has made you think about your own risk.

How the work is done.

Prevention works best as a continuing conversation, not a one-off check.

  1. A full history

Your own history and your family history, along with lifestyle, medicines and previous results. Risk starts with the story.

  2. Proper baseline data

Your risk assessed as a whole, including cardiovascular and metabolic risk, with screening that suits your age, sex and history and is supported by evidence.

  3. A plan reviewed over time

A schedule of follow-up and screening that is realistic for you, with the plan changing as your results and circumstances do.

Your first visit.

The first visit looks at your risk as a whole. You are asked about your health, your family history, your lifestyle and any earlier results, and your priorities are part of the conversation.

Screening is discussed against what the evidence supports for your age, sex and history. The benefits and limits of each test are explained, and you decide with the doctor what is worth doing.

What this is not.

  • Not a full-body scan or a long list of tests. More tests are not always better.
  • Not a guarantee that a disease will be prevented. Prevention lowers risk, and it cannot remove it.
  • Not a replacement for the care of a condition you already have, which is managed as part of general medicine.

More tests are not always better.

Screening can cause false alarms and unnecessary follow-up. Only tests that are supported by evidence for your age and risk are suggested, and the reasons are explained.

Common questions.

How is this different from a routine medical?

A routine visit often deals with one problem. Preventive care looks at your risk as a whole, with time to talk through your history and what the results mean for you.

How often will I need to come back?

It depends on your risk and your plan. Follow-up is agreed with you rather than fixed in advance.

Will I be sent for a long list of tests?

No. Tests are chosen because there is a reason for them in your case, and the reason is explained before you have them.

I feel well. Is there any point?

Many conditions develop quietly for years. Looking early is the point of prevention, and feeling well is a good time to start.

What is cardiovascular risk?

It is the chance of having a heart attack or stroke over the coming years, estimated from factors such as age, blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, smoking and family history. Knowing it helps decide what is worth doing.

Does this include cancer screening?

Which screening is suitable depends on your age, sex and history. It is discussed with you, with the benefits and limits of each test explained.

Is this the same as an employer or insurance medical?

No. This is a consultation about your health and a plan, not a form-filling visit. If you need a form completed, please ask the practice whether that can be arranged.
