Mind, emotion and mental health

Emotion, memory, dreams and the mind in distress

Emotion, memory, dreaming and mental illness sit where neuroscience, psychology and philosophy overlap. The programme returns to them often, partly because the question of what a mind is cannot be separated from what happens when minds struggle.

Guests discuss how emotions might be constructed by the brain rather than simply triggered, how fear and memory can be changed, what dreaming might be for, and how computational ideas are being used to understand psychosis and other conditions. Others ask what is gained and lost when ordinary human distress is treated as a medical problem, and where biological and psychological explanations each fall short.

Dr Naidu's own training includes a master's degree in the philosophy and ethics of mental health, and the conversations reflect his interest in how scientific theories about the mind feed into care.

Nothing on this page is a guide to diagnosis or treatment. If you are worried about your mental health, speak to a doctor or another qualified professional. In an emergency call 10177 or 112, or go to your nearest emergency room. In South Africa the SADAG Suicide Crisis Helpline is 0800 567 567.
