Kevin Mitchell
Neuroscientist and geneticist: agency, free will and the self
Who they are, and what we talked about
Kevin Mitchell is an associate professor of genetics and neuroscience at Trinity College Dublin. He writes about how living organisms act as genuine agents in the world, and about what that means for free will, selfhood and consciousness.
He has been a guest twice. In 2023 the conversation asked how evolution could have given us free will. In 2026 they returned to consciousness and asked whether it requires a subject, taking in the self, agency and the limits of artificial intelligence.
