Eric Schwitzgebel
Philosopher: introspection, moral psychology and artificial minds
Who they are, and what we talked about
Eric Schwitzgebel is a professor of philosophy at the University of California, Riverside, who writes on introspection, moral psychology and the philosophy of mind, and who blogs at The Splintered Mind. He is interested in how little certainty we have about our own inner lives.
He has joined Dr Naidu twice. In 2022 they discussed his universal bizarreness thesis and the perplexities of consciousness. In 2025 they returned to the question of whether we will know when artificial intelligence becomes conscious, and why uncertainty about that may persist.
