Philosopher of mind: illusionism about consciousness
Who they are, and what we talked about
Keith Frankish is a philosopher of mind and Honorary Reader in Philosophy at the University of Sheffield. He edited the volume Illusionism as a Theory of Consciousness, and he defends illusionism, the view that the vivid inner qualities we seem to experience are produced by the way the brain represents itself.
He has been a guest twice. In 2021 the conversation introduced illusionism, its variants and its ethical implications. In 2024 they returned to the subject through the idea of Descartes' prison, and illusionism as a way of testing our intuitions about consciousness.
